What is the key to successful seed cycling?

Have you been struggling with some hormonal issues for quite some time now? Perhaps you feel like you’ve tried every solution but nothing has made a lasting difference? Seed cycling could be the answer to get your hormonal issues under control so you can feel and look your best, every day!

There are a number of factors which contribute to successful seed cycling.  These include:

1. Consistency

One thing I used to hear from my clients would be “It’s so frustrating - I keep forgetting to take the blends!”. Or “I need an easy way to remember to incorporate them!”

Like with any new practice or habit, consistency is key and it takes time. Trying out some of the recipes like the Seed Cycle Bliss Balls is a great way to remember. (Because no one ever forgets to eat delicious snacks!)

Remembering to take the seed blends consistently is easier when you incorporate them into your daily routine. It’s as easy as including them with your breakfast by adding one scoop to your porridge, granola, smoothie or even on top of your smashed avo and sourdough.

Daily consistency is important for successful seed cycling. But if you do miss a day, don't stress. You can just double up the next day.

2. Track your progress

We recommend keeping a journal to track and note down your symptoms through your seed cycling experience. You may start to see differences as soon as within the first 1 month of seed cycling, however, usually though it does take 3-6 months to see changes or shifts.

Individual results will vary though, and it may take longer to notice. But just remember, quick results typically don’t last. Lasting results take time. Stay patient and stay consistent, and it will be worth it.

Dr. Jolene Brighten is a Functional Medicine Naturopathic Physician who encourages her patients to make seed cycling a lifelong practice, as it’s safe and gentle enough to do all the time, and also a really simple yet effective tool for supporting health hormone balance.

3. Address digestive issues

Hormone imbalances can be a result of digestive issues, blood sugar or nutrition deficiencies. We also know that our gut health plays a major role in our mood and mental health through the gut brain connection. Gut bacteria produces neurotransmitters such as serotonin (the happy hormone) which plays a key role in determining our mood.

Exposure to many things overtime can wipe out the good bacteria in our guts. BUT the good news is that we can protect and nourish our gut by doing the following:

  • Avoiding refined sugars and processed foods whenever possible. This is because they can cause inflammation as well as feed the bad types of bacteria and other organisms in your gut contributing to an imbalance of gut bacteria.
  • Include natural sources of probiotic foods. These could include fermented vegetables such as pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso, bone broth, kefir & kombucha.
  • Include prebiotic foods such as onions, garlic, leek, asparagus and bananas; especially unripe green bananas due to their high resistance starch content. This helps your gut bacteria produce nutrients for the colon cells and leads to a healthier digestive system.

It is important to discuss any issues or concerns with your health care professional if you do believe digestive issues or hormonal imbalance is affecting your menstrual cycle.

4. Manage stress levels

It is hard to ignore that stress is one of the biggest contributors to our hormones going out of balance. When we are under pressure, cortisol (our stress hormone) can go into overdrive, triggering that fight or flight response.

When we keep cortisol levels down your body can digest, repair and heal your gut.

There are many ways to best manage stress levels, and that is suited to each individual and/or situation. Some of these include meditation or yoga, exercise, a simple walk in the fresh air, doing some cooking or even giving EFT tapping a go.
